Tense situation in candidate country Croatia. The government seeks maximum flexibility regarding labour legislation.
The changes in the Labour Law in Croatia are adopted by the Parliament today. Trade unions call it "anti-workers" Labour law. The Parliament rejected 91 amendments suggested by different partners. The amendment banning the night work for pregnant women suggested by Social Democratic Party (SDP) was accepted. Still the members of SDP and other parties against the current Labour law left the Parliament session. The Labour Minister said that the adopted changes were necessary in order to conclude the negotiating chapter with EU, and that all rejected amendments will be subject for consultation for another round of changes. Union of Autonomous Trade Unions of Croatia (UATUC) announced that the adopted Labour law is the neoliberal cynicism of the Government: bringing Croatian legislation in line with EU legislation is used to undermine workers and their rights which is opposite to the European values. As a consequence health and safety of workers will be threatened by even more flexible working time. UATUC says the insensitivity of 79 Parliament members who voted in favour of the Labour law is terrifying!
